Day 20 – My Collection

Day 20 of the 31 Day Blog Challenge asks, “Do you have a collection?”

Well … I have over 350 Christmas ornaments. Does that count?

When I was a little girl, my absolute favorite thing about Christmas — aside from the ridiculous amount of presents we got, of course — was the Christmas tree, particularly the ornaments. I loved lying under the tree looking up, watching the twinkling lights bounce off the shiny glass balls while listening to our 8-track tape recording of A Mantovani Christmas. We had all kinds of different ornaments on our tree — a hodgepog, really. Some that my parents made together when they were first married, some that we made when we were kids, others that people had given us. I loved looking at them all.

Later, when we were first married and had our first house, I couldn’t wait to put up my own tree. My husband and I went out and bought some lights, a few boxes of glass ball ornaments and a box of little wooden apple ornaments. When we put them all up, it was pretty, but it still looked so bare. That’s when I became obsessed with ornaments. I wanted me a packed tree. Every year, I added more.

There are ornaments of all kinds — some made with little hands in school, some given to me by special people, some I bought while traveling. Others I bought over the years for the boys to have later — Star Wars for one, penguins for the other. And, of course, I collect Wizard of Oz ornaments for myself. I have some old ones that once belonged to my grandmother and my mother-in-law. All of them are special. Each have a memory attached, whether it be of a person, or a place, or time in my life.

Now, I not only have one packed tree — but two. One in the family room and one in the living room. I’m lobbying for one in the dining room, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Every year, I make a point of plugging into my Christmas playlist on my iPod and meditating on the tree.

And sometimes, when no one is looking? I crawl under the tree, lie down and look up.

You crawl under the tree, look up, and take pictures.

You have such beautiful trees. I’m envious of them. Not that I would want to put up more than one tree, but I love seeing the pictures of yours.

My mom bought me a tree ornament every year of my life so when I moved out I’d have a good start on my tree. I’m doing the same thing for my daughter. Like you I have a bit of a scrapbook Christmas tree full of memories and stories.
